| X-Post: Yule Ball Charity Auction |
[Nov. 28th, 2009|12:16 pm] |
Hiya folks!
I'm doing the last bit of organizing on the Charity Auction for the Yule Ball this Sat. If anybody has any materials they want to donate to the MN Literacy Council Charity Auction that will take place at the Yule Ball I am interested. I'll put cards and other promotional material by the items.
If the items do not sell, you will get them back.
We've got a couple of Etsy sellers donating small stuff, I'm donating some jewelry, and Im trying to convince my lovely wife that art she did 4 years ago is awesome and should go on the table as well.
I am NOT looking for very big or expensive stuff--I'm not sure how well bigger or more expensive items will go over.
If you are interested--shoot me a private message over LJ, call me if you've got my number, email me at my regular email or at stpaulyuleball@gmail.com
Thanks! |

| Watchman |
[Mar. 6th, 2009|03:16 am] |
....
Wow.
Seriously, wow.
I mean...its such a rare thing to see a movie I liked BETTER then the book.
Watchman kept everything that was awesome about the book, and removed all the stuff that took away from it. Then they cast it PERFECTLY. Add in some very cool and very well done special fx, and you've got one HELL of a movie.
also...preview for Wolverine: Origins. It has Gambit. SO. MUCH. SQUEE. |

so the first book im reading for my class on apocalypses (yes. it IS an awesome class, why do you ask) is making my head hurt.
y'see, it's got one really good book about tracking down and talking to really crazy people about thier belief in the end of the world, and its got a decent book about the belief systems of groups of crazy people described in a fairly even handed way. Unfortunately, these two books have been mashed together for some strange reason into one, hard to follow, terrible book.
The two books interrupt each other. The chapter on the anti-governament folks would have been better if they had focused on either the dude Ron Cole and his beliefs OR focused on the wacky folks who believe Texas was never a state. And sometimes the author can't even keep focused on a single set of crazies--in the current chapter the author is both talking about UFOs and the crazy idea of Free Energy--without really saying what the two ideas have in common. Free energy rightly belongs in a book about Psudoscience--not about the end of the world. and the Free Energy folks, if menioned at all, should have been mentioned in the chapter about how Earth (the goddess) is going to kill us all cuase we're being bad to her.
arg. I just want to go at his book with an editors scalpel and separate it into two books--both of which i'd happily read. as long as it was one and then another. The book just feels like it's stepping on it's own feet.
anyway. back to the book. I just needed to rant a bit at it.

It's no secret that i hate voicemail with a burning firey passion. I'm notoriously bad at checking my messages. that being said--
I'm not so bad that i haven't checked it in a year. I know this, 'cuase every so often teri will make me check them, usually when i have about 10 or so in the que.
Currently, in order to check my mesages, I have to sit through EVERY SINGLE MESSAGE I"VE RECIEVED IN THE PAST YEAR while my phone asks me, after repeating the phone # the message came from, if i want to erase it. there isn't an "erase all" function.
ARG. FUCK.
this means...If you've left me a VM in the past few weeks...I haven't gotten it. I'm trying to remove messages from sept. 2007 (now up to Nov. 2007!) from my phone.
so, do me a favor and just...don't leave me VMs for a while, k? if you can't get a hold of me by phone, send me an email. lrgilbert@gmail.com. don't call teri, unless it's really an emergency. lets face it tho--if its an emergency--leaving me a VM is...pretty useless. I won't get it. you're better off sending me an email, or just hanging up--missed calls actually show up on my phone, and it's easier to just call folks back. I'm MORE likely to get back to you if you hang up then if you leave me a message. ok?
grah. in a month or so, you all can leave me VMs again, I promise. and pookie will make sure i check them, and things will go back to normal--but it'll probably still be a more surefire way to get a hold of my by email then by VM. I mean, I check my email compulsively, at least twice a day--more if i'm working. |

[Apr. 18th, 2008|10:42 am] |
so teri and i, while we don't run into a great deal of discrimination for a variety of reasons, have had some amount of trouble getting a few of our close folks to accept our relationship as valid.
like my dad. who i am still debating on whether or not to send him an invite, and more recently, a friend, who shall remain anonymous.
we are getting married. this means that we are accepting that we will spend the rest of our lives together, that we will support eachother, ad that we are a team. we are committed to eachother, and we are planning on leaping through legal hoops to secure nearly all the rights that any straight couple has, aside from the actual, governmental recognition on our tax forms. we are planning on buying a house together and adopting a child together.
but for some, our relationship is not as valid as a straight couple's relationship because a book written by a bunch of crazy desert dwelling foks claiming an invisible sky fairy is the creator of the world says that marriage is only for men and women.
of course, it also says that we should stone children for being disobediant, that jesus hates fig trees that wont bloom out of season for him, and that women are inherently inferior to men....but all that is not what i'm talking about here.
cuase...my dad's reasoning for not seeing this as valid is based...as far as i can tell on inbred discomfort with the idea from his catholic upbringing. he's a bloody atheist, but all he can offer me are stupid reasons that i can shoot down with ease--that gay marriage will put an undue pressure on corporate america when theyhave to insure them. 'Cause gay folks don't have a right to affordable health care. no sir.
since it's so stupid, and i'm not so angry with him that i think he's actually become less intelligent and less logical...i belive thats his catholic roots saying that they are uncomfortable with the idea--like he was uncomfortable with my wicca phase back in high school--actually telling me that i need to be careful to not get into devil worship. so i'm guessing it's scripture based.
and its scritpure based discrimination like that that pisses me off the most.
'cause, in theory--this country has a thing called separation of church and state. and since marriage IS a secular thing here--see taxes, healthcare, visitation rights, children, adoption, and about 700-1600 other rights and responsibilities ( http://www.silive.com/news/advance/index.ssf?/news/samesex/stories/samesex01.html ) that straight couples do not even have to think about--there is NO FUCKING REASON FOR US TO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO THE WORD. Our relationship is already longer then most marriages. weve talked about all the same damn things. weve had a joint account for two years now, and we've supported eachother in sickness, in unemployment and in health. we've fought, we've made up, and no fucking way i will hear anybody telling me my relationship is less valid then britney spear's 55 hour marriage in vegas.
Can you understand how fucking INSULTING that is????
i understand if people want to make ALL PAST, CURRENT AND FUTURE "marriages" civil ceremonies, and use marriage to describe a purely religious ceremony in the christian tradition. but that would piss the fuck out of everybody who didnt have a priest at their wedding, that didnt get married EXACTLY according to the church of thier choice--and would probably have to define which sect of christainity (with this administration, itd be baptist) that would be accepted.
then its no longer discrimination. then everybody is given a civil commitment ceremony, and nobody gets ghettoized by "separate but equal."
but until that happens--I'm getting fucking MARRIED. and anybody who disputes that is insulting me, my lovely teri, our mental faculties, and our descision making skills, not to mention that it trivializes 5 years of working to get my family to accept us, the money and effort going into this thing, and same-sex marriages in general.
friends don't offer that kind of insult, and expect to be forgiven easily. and i certainly won't feel the need to invite you to celebrate my MARRIAGE.
as they say-- "them's fightin' words."
EDIT: i have since talked to my dad, and he has recanted all of the crap he had spewed earlier. i've heard those argument since, from other folks, so my responce to that shit remains. i.e. it is shit, and it smells. |

Mac wants all of my money. and if i had more money to give them they could probably get it.
i've always been a mac person, its true. but recently...theyve come out with gadgets that i dont really need, but WANT. seriously. My mom fed this when she made my xmas present an iTouch. i love it. its awesome, it's my new planner and music storage and portable hard drive. and it's shiney. and its got wireless. but that's something mac put out because they were working on cooler, bigger things.
like the iPhone. it's a mini-computer, and phone and camara and home office all in one little package with shiny buttons. it's awesome. and yes, i have absolutly no use for it--usually this is enough to keep me from lusting after tech-toy type things. but...no. not this time.
and now...this. the macbook air. go here( http://www.apple.com/macbookair/#ad ) and watch the ad. and if youre a big nerd like me, watch the little guided tour. its SO. COOL. i have a perfectly good computer that i love. it's more then i need right now. its the fastest thing ive ever used. but ...Macbook Air. maan. and by the time i need, and can afford a new mac, i know mac will convince me to spend far more then i wanted on something i don't need...but damn, it will be cool.
and soooo shiney.
yeah. stupid mac. being all awesome. |

It's finaly happened. Our last fishie, Ovid, died.
I think we're done with fish for now. we've done our best to keep them alive and happy, but frankly it's hard to keep fishies alive when they won't give you a hint that something is wrong until it's too late.
hint to fishies! if you act like you are just fine and happy, we can't take steps to fix your water!
So long fishies. our living room is really quiet without your tank noise. we'll miss you. |

go here and add your voice to the cry for a neato toph figure! tell mattell and nick and viacom that katara is awesome and needs to be on your book shelf! Explain that you want to hang Yue from the top of your room so you can have a moon spirit watching over you! Completists! you need to round out your colection of the Aang gang!
do it now. i wanna toph figure. and they haven't made one and have no plans yet to make one. there might be a katara figure coming out, but I haven't seen her yet, and that was the result of the first time this petition went out. tho, according to the petition makers--this is not enough! one katara does not round out the 5 diferent (some who have not appeared in the show) Aangs. or the fact that Roku has an action figure, but none of the girls yet.
c'mooon. you know you wanna sign it. toph needs to guard my book shelf. NEEDS TO. |
